The Hitachi G1000 is Sprint's first Pocket PC Phone Edition device. With a single-band 1xRTT radio, the phone generally cannot roam on other networks. However, as of release, it is Sprint's most powerful device, complete with XScale processor, speakerphone, and full QWERTY keyboard. It replaces the Toshiba 2032SP in Sprint's lineup.

Issues

"USB Is Connected" Issue - There is a bad batch of Hitachi G1000 units that will refuse to provision Vision services. Instead, they present the error "Error Provisioning: USB Is Connected" despite no cables connected to the device. Only current resolution is to take the phone in to a Sprint Store and have it replaced.

High Pitched Noise In Earpiece - Many G1000 units have a very high pitched noise that emits from the earpiece whenever the display is turned on. From what we've been able to discern, this is due to a portion of the radiation shielding in between the display and the earpiece either not being sealed or not being installed. Again, take the phone to a Sprint Store and have it replaced.

Missing Hard Reset Switch - Some G1000's were shipped out without a hard reset switch. While it is possible to short the circuit and still perform a hard reset, this will void the warranty on the device. Instead, take the phone into a Sprint Store and have it replaced.

Camera Flipover Failure - Some hardware revisions have problems with the camera after applying the SDIO update. When the camera faces forward, the image is upside-down instead of flipping automatically as it should. There is no fix for this issue other than to remove the SDIO update. As an alternative, use a PC to correct the image.

Tips/Tricks/Hacks

Hack: BitPim - You can access the internal modem on your G1000 with BitPim. Connect the G1000 to your computer, and then enable PC Modem mode. Set BitPim to "Other CDMA Phone" and you should be able to access the modem's filesystem on the G1000.

Hack: How to enable PC Phone-as-Modem functionality:

1) Make sure you are running ActiveSync 3.8 or later
2) Modify the following key in the G1000's registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINEControlPanelModemSwitch "Group"=dword:00000001

For those of you new to Pocket PC registry modification, the easiest way to do it is to install PHM Registy Editor and follow the following graphic:
regedit.gif
3) Soft reset the G1000 after saving the change
4) Open the Modem Control Panel (should show up in Settings, or you can access the Modem.cpl file directly in /Windows) and switch the mode from ActiveSync to PC Modem
5) Plug the G1000 into the PC
6) Point the Add New Hardware Wizard to the G1000 driver (available above)
7) Go to Network Connections (or Dial-Up Networking) and create a new connection with the G1000 as the modem to #777 (leave username and password blank)
8) Open the new connection and connect.

Currently this only works on Windows, as no driver exists for other operating systems.
